Rule 1
Have a Background in Therapy
If you want to coach executives, you should have a doctorate in psychiatry, 20 years’ experience counseling patients on a leather sofa, and bookshelves full of weighty leather-bound tomes about Sigmund Freud.

Don’t Do Work

For some executives and some coaches, those guidelines are great (the rules generally became “the rules” for a reason). But I’ll be honest:

I’m not a therapist. Far from it.
Therapy is great for people in need of healing. I would never discount the important work that mental health professionals provide.
But successful executives—those of us working 14 hours a day to launch businesses, build empires, and take over the world—aren’t looking for someone to help them heal.
They—we—are looking for someone to help them perform even better. To execute at a higher level. To help them refine their vision, craft strategies to pursue it,
